Quarter final report

14th January: Thursday's action at the Moorilla Hobart International saw Alona Bondarenko advance to the semifinals for the first time in five visits to the Tasmanian capital. The Ukrainian now faces top seed Anabel Medina Garrigues, while No.2 seed Shahar Peer plays unseeded Sara Errani of Italy in the other semi.

Fourth-seeded Bondarenko's victim was No.7 seed Zheng Jie, who had prevailed in their two previous meetings but was unable to recover from a slow start this time.

Although the 2005 champion managed to claw back a 5-1 deficit in the opener, and managed to fend off 11 of the 17 break points she faced, it was Bondarenko who played the big points better for a straight sets win, 75 75.

"My concentration was good and it helped me win this close match," said Bondarenko, who is 2-1 against Medina Garrigues to date - although the Spaniard won their last meeting on the hardcourts of Dubai last February.

For her part, Medina Garrigues survived a see-saw tussle against No.8 seed Gisela Dulko of Argentina, 61 57 61. Peer had to work even harder for her place in the final four, taking nearly three hours to stop fifth-seeded Carla Suárez Navarro in the night session, 46 76(4) 75.

But things were more straightforward for Errani, who defeated qualifier Kirsten Flipkens in the only seedless quarterfinal of the day, 63 64. Errani was helped by an impressive first service percentage of 82 percent, though both players won barely a third of points off their second deliveries.
