Ferrera rolling with the punches

Italy, 12th January 2010: Under fire Juventus coach Ciro Ferrara vowed to take a leaf out of Rocky Balboa's book as he bids to ride the storm of his team's dismal form.

A 3-0 home defeat to AC Milan left them 12 points behind Serie A leaders Inter Milan at the halfway point of the season and having already been knocked out of the Champions League in December, Juventus can realistically only hope to win their domestic cup and the Europa League this season.

But following six defeats in their last eight matches in all competitions, Ferrara admits that he is on the brink.

"I'm like Rocky, I take punches, I'm covered in blood but I keep saying to my opponent: hit me harder because that didn't hurt," he said, making an illusion to the character made famous by Sylvester Stallone.

"The defeat to Milan doesn't change anything, there's been talk about my job for some time.

"I know what the club thinks and I'm fully aware that the destiny of every coach is tied to results.

"If those aren't there, the club will take the measures they believe suitable to changing our fortunes.

"If that means I get fired I won't look upon it as a failure but as part of the learning curve in my career, which has only just begun.

"And, as my mother says, when one door closes, a gate opens up."

Ferrara is in his first head coaching job having previously been the youth team coach at Juventus and having helped Marcello Lippi in the Italy set-up.

He took over from the sacked Claudio Ranieri two games before the end of last season and began life at the Juventus helm with six straight league wins.

However, things have steadily gone sour since then and Juve are now looking over their shoulders at teams such as Napoli and AS Roma - coached by Ranieri - as they bid to hold onto a top four spot.

The word in Italy is that Ferrara's days are numbered but it is well known that Juve are hard up given that they are in the process of building a new stadium.

The choice of Ferrara when Ranieri was fired was considered to be partly an economic one, given that he was already on the payroll.

And with rumours from Russia suggesting that Guus Hiddink has been told he can leave the national team job if he wants there is speculation that he is being lined up as ferrera's successor.

Thursday 7th January: Serie A champions Inter Milan started the new year with a 1-0 win over Chievo to maintain their lead over AC Milan.

Inter were deprived of a number of midfield stars, handing a rare start to wantaway French midfielder Patrick Vieira who is on the verge of a move to Manchester City.

However their absences due to injury proved no major handicap and striker Mario Balotelli gave Jose Mourinho's side a welcome lead when he struck on the counter in the 12th minute.

Inter were given little trouble for the remainder of the match and pocketed the three points to sit on 42 in total after 18 games.

"I am extremely happy," said Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho.

"These are the type of matches that are decisive and puts a smile on a coach's face because the personality displayed by the team was astonishing."

It was not all happy news for Inter, though, as their Romanian international defender Cristian Chivu fractured his skull in a clash of heads in the 46th minute while Balotelli was subjected to racist abuse.

Balotelli, born in Palermo but of Ghanaian heritage, is regularly subjected to such insults but usually tries to shrug it off, but  the 19-year-old could not contain his anger.

"Every time I come to Verona I realise that the supporters disgust me more and more. It's completely unacceptable," Balotelli told Sky Sports.

Elsewhere Juventus got off to a winning start to the new year having lost five of their previous six matches in all competitions with a 2-1 win over Parma.

Midfielder Hasan Salihamidzic scored only three minutes into the encounter and an own-goal had them 2-0 up by the break.

The 'Old Lady' hung on for the three points despite having on-loan defender Martin Caceres sent-off in the second-half. AC Milan, with the back on loan David Beckham, remain in 2nd after beating Genoa 5-2.

Napoli lie fourth after a 2-0 victory over Atalanta while Roma will be kicking themselves after letting a 2-0 lead slip away at Cagliari with the home side scoring twice in time added on to force a 2-2 draw.

Serie A returns after winter break

Wednesday 6th January 2010:  Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho was drawn on his future in the pre-match press conference ahead of Internazionale's meeting with Chievo.

The 'Special One' had set the football rumour mill buzzing when he admitted he would like a return to the English Premier League at some point in his career after his successful stint at Chelsea. Mourinho reaffirmed his commitment to Inter stating that he would not leave a job half done.

"I am in love with English football, with the English lifestyle and it's true I want to go back.

"But I don't know when it will happen. And I will never leave a job half-done. It's fairly easy. I have a contract until 2012 and I love being here.

"Then again, I could stay here or even go to Japan or Riyadh…"

Meanwhile David Beckham could kick-off his 2nd loan spell at AC Milan with a start against Genoa in a match to be shown live on Omnisport at 19:45 GMT tonight.

Having not played since the Major League Soccer final at the end of November, he is expected to begin among the substitutes against Genoa though that could change if Milan midfielders Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf and Gianluca Zambrotta fail late fitness tests.

Should Beckham be needed, there is certainly confidence about his physical condition following a series of tests upon his arrival back in Milan.

The Lega Calcio resumes with Inter in top spot, eight points ahead of Milan with Juventus one point back in third spot.

About the competition

Serie A, the premier league of Italian professional football, comprises 20 clubs featuring some of the most famous and glamorous names in the world, including Juventus, the two Milan clubs - AC Milan and current champions Internazionale - as well as the Rome duo of Lazio and Roma. Add to the mix Fiorentina and the club made famous by Diego Maradona - SSC Napoli - and you have the perfect cocktail for exciting football. In January '09 the world's most famous footballer - David Beckham - joined AC Milan on loan and may well return in January 2010 in a bid to be selected for the England World Cup Squad.

The title is often referred to as the Scudetto (small shield) because the winning team will bear a small coat of arms with the Italian tricolour on their strip for the following season.
