About the competition

MLS is the top tier of soccer in North America comprising fifteen teams with one new club - Seattle Sounders - joining for the 2009 season.

The season began in March and will run until November.

The 15 teams in the league are divided into the Eastern and Western Conferences — seven in the Eastern Conference, eight in the Western Conference. Each team plays 30 games, evenly divided between home and away matches. The top four teams of each Conference take part in the MLS Playoffs at the end of the season culminating in the MLS Cup

The current holders are Columbus Crew.

The success of the MLS has often been dependent on the fortunes of the USA national team, particularly after the 2002 World Cup when USA made the quarter finals beating Mexico and Portugal on the way.

The international profile of the League was further heightened in 2007 when Los Angeles Galaxy signed David Beckham from Real Madrid.
