The current season

The 2009 / 10 A League season began on August 6th 2009 when champions Melbourne Victory were surprisingly beaten at home 0-2  by Central Coast Mariners.

The regular season will finish on February 14th 2010 followed by the play-off semi-finals, preliminary final and grand final.

This season saw two new clubs join the league - Gold Coast United and North Queensland Fury which has resulted in Queensland Roar changing their name to Brisbane Roar since they are no longer the only club in Queensland.

Former England and Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has joined North Queensland Fury.

About the competition

The A League was founded in its current format in 2004 with the inaugural season kicking off a year later. The league comprised eight clubs including one, Wellington Phoenix, from New Zealand. The league sponsor is Hyundai, Australia. For the 2009 / 10 season two new clubs have been added to the league - Gold Coast Utd and North Queensland Fury.

Each team is only allowed a squad size of twenty-three and a salary cap of $1.7 Australian dollars ($1.4 USD) operates although each club is allowed one marquee player who can be paid above this limit. At the end of the season the top four clubs enter a playoff competition - the Finals Series - to decide the champions.
